Bishop Herbert A. Bevard - Bishop of St. Thomas
Bishop Bevard was born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 24, 1946. He attended Oxford Elementary School in Oxford, PA from Grades 1 through 5 and then attended McDonough School in Baltimore, MD from grades 6 through 12, graduating in 1964. In June of 1964 he converted to Catholicism. He attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA from 1964 to 1966.
In September 1966 he entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary - Overbrook in Wynnewood, PA where he received his BA and MDiv. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 20, 1972 by His Eminence John Cardinal Krol in the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, PA.
Since his ordination, Bishop Bevard's pastoral assignments have included serving as Assistant Pastor in various parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He is currently the Pastor of St. Athanasius in the Philadelphia North Vicariate. On March 24, 2003 he was named Chaplain to His Holiness and on June 18, 2007 he was named Vicar of Philadelphia North by His Eminence, Justin Rigali.
Bishop Bevard is a member of several Catholic organizations and serves on many Boards and Commissions in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia which include the Knights of Peter Claver, Knights of Columbus, Legion of Mary, Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, Interparochial Cooperation Commission, Council of Priests, College of Consulters, Pastor's Review Board, Priest Personnel Board, Mentor in the Pastoral Leadership Institute and the Priests Advisory Committee - Archdiocesan Capital and Endowment Campaign. He has also served as the Newman Chaplain at Pennsylvania State University from 1972 -1973 and at Widener University from 1973 -1978. He was an Advocate in the Office of the Metropolitan Tribunal.
